Since this post is kind of personal today, I decided to link up with Latoya too!  Today, her topic is favorites nouns: 

Person: My hubby.  He's my world.  
Place: The lazy river at the JW Marriott in Scottsdale, AZ.  Seriously.  We used to go all the time when we lived there.  
Thing: iPad.  I loooooove it.  
Animal(s):  Our two pooches, Jackson & Rocco.  You can see their cute faces in my sidebar.  They're my babies.  

What do you like best about the grade you teach?  Least?

We're winding down the year right now and I just LOVE this time of year.  Not because it's almost Summer, but because this is the time of year when I can really see huge changes in my students.  My youngest class came in knowing how to say "hello."  That's it.  They can now hold a basic conversation, follow multi-step directions, and their vocabulary is off the charts.  I love seeing how much they've grown.

My least favorite part has to be the language barrier.  I love teaching them English, but it's so hard when I can't get a concept across or explain it well enough in French.  Plus, some of my parents don't speak any English, so I have to get someone to translate instead of sounding like an idiot in French. 

What are your strengths as a teacher?  Weaknesses?  

I'd say my strengths are differentiation, flexibility, and organization.  We do a lot of centers in my classes.  I just find it more engaging for the kids, especially when I have so many different levels.  I believe it's so important to differentiate as much as possible.  If I had it my way, students would be grouped into classes based on ability instead of age... but that's a whole other rabbit trail.   I'm extremely flexible, sometimes TOO flexible, when it comes to scheduling, parents, colleagues, etc.  I like consistency, but won't put up too big a fight when someone suggests changing things up.  Organization is something else I think I'm pretty savvy at.  Right now I don't have my own personal classroom (we rotate based on class size), so it's driving me nuts that I have to lug everything around and can't decorate.  My classroom is always organized to the T. 

My weaknesses have to be procrastination, priority organization, and overloading myself.  I'm such a "yes" person.  "Yes, I can do that!", "Yes, let's take on this project." Yes, yes, yes.  I really need to learn how to start saying no.  I just don't have time for some of the stuff I say yes to.  Once I add something to my plate, I tend to do a terrible job at prioritizing it.  Grad school paper or edit photos from vacation?  Definitely edit photos from vacation.  Haha!  I tend to gravitate towards the more fun activities first.  I've been known to even clean the toilet or give the dogs a bath just to avoid sitting down and getting the "hard" things done.  I always cause myself more stress by procrastinating and it drives me nuts that I haven't been able to change that about myself.  :(  

What has been your most embarrassing teacher moment?

Oh gosh.  Lots.  I feel like a walking disaster sometimes.  Besides the booger in front of the superintendent, I think my most embarrassing moment has to be when my kindergarteners corrected my pronunciation of "crayons" in front of parents.  Omiword.  Talk about wanting to crawl under a rock.  We had a class event early on in the school year, where parents and students were both invited.  I was giving instructions and said "... use your crayons to..." blah, blah, blah.  Side note: I used to pronounce "crayon" like "crown."  I don't know if it's a Kentucky thing, or just me.  Probably just me.  

Boy 1: "Mrs. Huge (that's how they say it), we don't have a crown!"  
Boy 2: "Yeah, do we get crowns!?"
Entire class: "Yay!  Crowns!"
Me: "No, these crowns silly."  [holding up a cup of crayons]
Girl: "Oooooohhhh, crAYONs."
Boy 1: "Why do you say it like that?"
[parents laughing]
Me: dying inside a little

Needless to say, I'm a little sensitive to how I pronounce crAYONs now.  :)  

If you could change only one thing about your classroom, what would it be? (more room is obvious... haha)

Seriously, the shape of the tables.  I have trapezoid (yes) shaped tables right now.  My classrooms are tiny and it's like doing a human-size jigsaw puzzle every flippin' class.  I've crushed a pinky, stubbed my toe, and have nearly killed myself from rearranging them.  I always have to move them back into the original spot because we all switch classrooms.  


Don't get me wrong.  Trapezoid tables are pretty sweet when you have a big room, but mine is about the size of a Barbie dream house.   

How much time do you spend planning?  How often?

I sort of plan weekly.  At the beginning of the year, I make a ginormous outline of skills, units, standards, etc.   I figure out how much content we need to get through, look at how many days we have, take away days for testing, fun, etc. and then figure out what to do and when.  I tend to stay on track, but look at my plans each week and adjust things or swap out some fun activities that my blog buddies share.  :)  I spend days upon days planning before school starts, so it's pretty easy for me to just plug in activities and assessments each week.  I'd say I spend about 2-3 hours each week prepping, printing, laminating, etc. 

What's the one part of your job that you dislike the most?

That I'm leaving soon!?  Holy guacamole.  I can't believe my second year over here is coming to an end.  I've really enjoyed it and have learned SOOOO much about teaching students from various cultures, working with teachers from various cultures, and a lot about myself as a teacher.  If I had to be serious about this question though, I would say all the admin. stuff.  You know... paperwork, putting in attendance and lesson plans online, etc.  Not very fun.  

How do you see your role of "teacher" changing in the next 5 years?

Heavy question huh?  In my current grad school classes, we've been doing a lot of research/reading/discussing/and thinking about how technology is (or isn't) changing our roles as teachers.  In the next 5 years, I can see myself becoming more of a "curator" of learning.    Kids are learning in so many new ways now, and it's so important that we incorporate all of those fun gadgets and tools.  I can see the act of learning sort of transforming into more of an individualized experience, integrated with a lot of technology.  Leveled learning modules, online activities, center-based activities, project-based work, etc.  I've never really been heavy with the stand-in-front-and-talk and worksheets anyway, but those are definitely on the way out.  I find myself doing more and more "curating", especially with kids at different ability levels.  I'm stopping there.... I could spend hours talking about how I think a classroom should run.  Basically... give students what they need... exactly when they need it.  Not before they're ready and not after they've mastered it.  [step off soapbox]

If you had the chance to add a certification (or skill) to your list of credentials, what would it be? 

I'm certified K-8, have my early childhood endorsement, EFL endorsement, and am currently getting my masters in leadership and technology.  I don't know if I want any more!  Haha!  I'd LOVE to really get into curriculum and coaching more though.  My ideal job would be a curriculum coach.  I love helping my colleagues find resources and different ways to teach.   

If you weren't in education, what would you be doing? 

I'd be laid out on a beach somewhere, looking like a leather suitcase, holding a margarita.  Just kidding.  I'd probably be in interior design.  I'm obsessed with houses.  My favorite Pinterest category?  Home decor.

Morning person or night owl?

Big time night owl.  I don't know if it's because of the 6 hour time difference, but I've become a ridiculous night owl in the past two years.  I need to get more sleep.  

How do you keep your sanity?  Or do you? 

Praying, coffee, naps, wine, and my husband.  

The most valuable piece of teacher advice I've received...

"Be consistent."  I find that having a routine, as mundane as it gets, is a life-saver.  My kids are whack-o when we forget to do our morning message or something that we do each class.  I write the schedule on the board too, which they LOVE.  They will call me out on it if I don't check something off after we've done it.  Although I struggle with consistency in my personal life, I always make sure I am consistent with my kiddos.

It's been a while since I've done a little post with updates.  Here's a little of what's consuming my life right now, besides school...

Grad School

Last semester I had 9 hours.  I would be curled up into a little ball if I took 3 classes this round.  I've got 2 (6 hours) and plenty of reading to keep me busy.   My eyes are starting to cross... and I'm getting all of my books and sources mixed up.  

P.S. I really don't like reading... at all.

Moving Back

I'd say that most of you probably know that we currently live in Switerland (not Sweden) right now.  We move back this Summer (July-ish).  Our brains have shifted into the "what-the-heck-do-we-need-to-do?" mode.   Apparently it's harder to leave than it is to come here.  

Job Hunting Begins

This past week I began updating my e-portfolio & resume, researching schools & districts, making sure my certification is up to par, and stressing.  I have no idea what to expect.  I've held a lot of different positions, which is a good thing, but it would be easier if I was just targeting one thing (like a classroom teaching position).  It's in the good Lord's control.  

Clipart... when I actually have time

Yes, I still actually make clipart.  It's definitely taken a backseat this past month... and probably will for the next few.  If you've been requesting stuff from me (or have sent me an email), then chances are it's going to take me longer than usual.  :(  I'm a little sad about it.  I love making stuff, but just wish I had more time to get to things faster.

Well, March Madness is in full swing!  

While I'm slightly depressed that my Kentucky Wildcats won't win the championship again, I'm not sad enough to disregard the tournament all together.  I guess we've got to have  a crappy season in order to get some of our guys to stay on and not get drafted?  Hopefully?   I'm excited about our team next year though...  Harrison twins, Randle, some returning players...  oh my.

"One day, in my second year of teaching, I was discussing the names of body parts with my 1st grade ESL students when something embarrassing happened. It was time to go over the word foot. Since my students were seated in desks I picked up my foot (without my sandal) so they all had a good view when all of a sudden, one of my little boys started saying, "Ewwww, gross!!" I looked at the sole of my foot and realized that I had been wearing black sandals in 100 degree humid LA weather which had turned the soles of my feet black! I had to explain that I HAD taken a shower and washed my feet but my shoes had caused them to appear as though they hadn't been washed in days. Since then, I don't dare take my foot out of my shoe in front of students."

If you could change only one thing about your classroom, what would it be? (more room is obvious... haha)

"I would love to have more windows! Natural light always helps my mood and our little school is short on windows!"

How much time do you spend planning?  How often?

"Most often I do a little planning every day but Sundays are usually dedicated to planning. I usually spend 2 or 3 hours on Sunday afternoon planning my activities and lessons for the upcoming week."

What's the one part of your job that you dislike the most?

"Parents that expect miracles but don't follow through on their part. I believe both the teacher and parent have responsibilities to ensure a student's success."

"I would love to have the time to get my masters in technology."

"My first bachelor's degree was in fashion merchandising and business, so I would say I would be working in the fashion industry."

Happy Tuesday everyone!  I hope you're having a great week so far.  Today, I wanted to share with you a little bit about how I organize my life... schedules, to do lists, blog calendar, idea lists, etc.  I've always been the hopeless notebook type.  I love buying new calendars and notebooks, but I'm h.o.r.r.i.b.l.e. at at keeping it up.  Absolutely horrible.  I can't tell you how many half-used calendars and little schedule notebooks I've thrown away.  I start off great and then just give up.  Anyone else like that?  Erin Condren still tempts me though.  

Here's my new bff...
Recently, I forced myself to get into the habit of using iCloud to do everything.  Let me tell ya... I'm in love.  It was a little tough at first to get into the routine, but I'm golden now.  I have been able to get (and STAY) organized over the past two months.  It's so nice.  

No, you don't need a Mac.  Just an Apple id.  The purpose of iCloud is to sync all of your Apple devices (iPhone, Mac, iPad, etc.) and allow content to be accessed from any device.  So, all my stuff is on my computer, iPad, and phone.  However, you don't have to have any of these devices to take advantage.  All you need is an iTunes account.... which you probably do.  (If not, google it.  It's easy to do.)  


Once you have an Apple id, go to icloud.com and log in.  You'll see this screen:
You've got a lot of great tools to keep you organized!  

Mail

You can sync all of your various email accounts.  I've got four... yowza.  So with one click, I can access any messages!  Yay!!!  

Contacts

Family, friends, colleagues, and blogging buddies... all in one place!  I can even sync up their birthdays to the calendar.  I like that I don't have to mess with one of those little tabbed notebooks.  :)

Calendar

This is my FAVORITE part.  The Calendar.  I have so many different calendars that I need to keep track of... school, grad school, blogging, birthdays, personal stuff, etc.  Apple's calendar allows you to have lots of different calendars, view days/weeks/months at a time, color code events, set them to repeat, and lots of other fun features... including attaching documents to dates (like a class agenda).  It's kept my butt nice and organized recently.   

Notes

Wishlists, ideas, clipart requests, project ideas.... all in one place.  I can have as many different notes as I want!  When I'm done, I just erase a line or completely delete the note.  Coolest part?  I can email it to myself or a friend!  

Reminders

This little beauty allows you to make little checklists, to do lists, or set reminders that can sync to your calendar.  Need to remember to order flowers before Grandma's birthday?  Voila.  Never disappoint grandma again... like I did.  

Find My iPhone/iPad

Leave your iPad laying on a chair in the Chicago airport?  No?  That's just me?  Thanks to this little app, you have a little more hope of finding your device.  You can make it beep (so you can find it under the couch), locate it on a map, or wipe the data in case it gets jacked.  

iWork

I don't use this one because I don't have a Mac, but this allows you to use Pages (Word), Keynote (PPT), and Numbers (Excel) on your devices... and syncs your work.  Kind of like the Dropbox concept.  
I LOVE having everything in one place and the fact that it updates on each device.  No more notebooks, stupid notes everywhere, or feeling so disorganized.  

I just wanted to share a little techy organization tip with ya!  I hope you enjoyed!  Let me know if you're inspired to try it out.  I definitely haven't found anything that I like using more than this.  It's simple, everything's in one place, and it works.

"I love that I can joke with these students and hold conversations with them. I have taught them how to be responsible and know that their efforts directly correlate with their success. Second grade is a grade that still can have tons of fun while starting to learn challenging reading standards."

Strengths: organization, technology, differentiation {Daily 5 really helps all of those strengths}

What has been your most embarrassing teacher moment?  

"One day, my Kindergarten students were doing their morning work and singing 'This Old Man' over and over and over again. I was SO tired of hearing it, so I asked them to quiet down. 

Well, they didn't stop singing (of course) and I had one little boy in my class (everyone has that one little guy) who decided to start screaming the song at the top of his lungs. 

Boy: "This old man, he played one, he played........"
Me: (fed up with the screaming song, turned around to scream boy's name and ask him to hush, but when I turned around to scream "{NAME}", I turned around and screamed.....) KNICK KNACK!!!

Instead of saying the boy's name, I finished his song for him at the top of my lungs. My teaching assistant and I lost it and I was mortified to say the least."

If you could change only one thing about your classroom, what would it be? (more room is obvious... haha)

"I really miss my bean shaped table from my Kindergarten room! I really wish I had more space to meet in small group. I'm usually meeting up with groups on the floor and sometimes teaching outfits don't do so well on the floor."

"Also, I'd love revamp my room using School Girl's Style's inspiration."

How much time do you spend planning?  How often?

"Since I am a TPT seller, I always tie my products into my classroom lesson plans, so I spend about and hour or two a day planning lessons, plus an EXTRA hour or two creating those products!"

"My friends tease me saying that I am always stuck to my laptop... which may be true!"

What's the one part of your job that you dislike the most?

"I dislike that teaching has become very focused on the state/national assessment. We aren't supposed to "teach to the test", but we are finding that it is expected for these students to be prepared for these standardized tests before they even get into the 'testing grades'."

How do you see your role as a "teacher" changing in the next 5 years?

"I believe that my innovation and creativity will grow over the next few years even more than it has already. With technology on the rise and expectations higher and higher because of our new teaching evaluation system, being a "boring" teacher just isn't acceptable anymore! I am currently practicing brand new teaching strategies in the classroom and I don't believe that I'll ever be satisfied settling for what I did the year before. I'll always be improving and changing."

If you had the chance to add a certification (or skill) to your list of credentials, what would it be?  

"I actually have a certification in Gifted and Talented and absolutely love it, but they are cutting all sorts of funds for that. So if G/T goes out the window, I would love to add Spanish to my list. I adore my Spanish speaking students and wish I could be more helpful with Spanish families."

If you weren't in education, what would you be doing?  

"If I wasn't a teacher, I'd be a wedding/party planner in a big city."

"My favorite things about first grade have to be listening to how 6 and 7 year old kids communicate and watching them learn to write interesting, funny stories. Almost everything is new and exciting to them. They love to learn and if you make it fun, they have no clue they are learning."

"My most embarrassing moment would have to be from a few years ago. I was playing kickball with my kids and was running for home. One of my kids got in front of me and the only way to not hurt him was to dive over him. That's not a huge deal when you are 16, but at 30 it was painful. If you could change only one thing about your classroom, what would it be? (more room is obvious... haha)

"I would have an iPad for every kid in my classroom. I love my workspace and can honestly say it is exactly how I want it."

How much time do you spend planning?  How often?

"I want to say I spend a few hours throughout the week planning. I don't usually do it all in one day. Plus, it never fails that I throw in a few extra activities that I find on Pinterest or blogs during the weekend."

What's the one part of your job that you dislike the most?

"Papers!!! I hate grading papers, homework folders, and anything else that requires checking and rechecking. I think some days I spend more time doing paperwork than anything else."

How do you see your role as a "teacher" changing in the next 5 years?

"I think I will continue to move towards doing more hands on lessons and small group teaching. I still think that there is a time to do whole group lessons, but over the last few years I've realized how much more my students seem to grasp when I follow whole group lessons with center activities."

"That's where I've really enjoyed Daily 5. It gives me the opportunity to do more small group instruction because so much of Daily 5 allows students to work independently. I can honestly say I didn't think it would work with first graders, but once I learned how to make it fit my own classroom, it has worked great."

If you had the chance to add a certification (or skill) to your list of credentials, what would it be?  

"If I could add another certification, I'd go back and get my specialist in leadership or in instructional technology."

If you weren't in education, what would you be doing?  

"Wow! I have no idea! I've wanted to be a teacher since I was seven. I feel like I'm getting paid to do what I've wanted to do my entire life. I guess if I wasn't a teacher, I would have been a coach or a missionary. I would have to do something where I'm helping people."

How do you keep your sanity?  Or do you? 

"The best way thing I do to keep my sanity is probably having a Coke a day and playing mindless games on my iPad. Oh, and hitting softballs. It's amazing how much that can release a little tension and stress."

The most valuable piece of teacher advice I've received...

"The world will keep going even if you take a day to do something for yourself. You will never have it all done. It's okay to work towards getting it all done, but put your family, friends, and those you love first because lesson plans, papers, and school will always be there. Those you love could be gone in a heartbeat."
