I'm linking up with DeAnne over at First Grade and Fabulous!  She's hosting a great linky all about FOOOOOD!!!!  I absolutely love Thanksgiving.  It's been a few years since we've been able to make it home for Thanksgiving with our family (Christmas is when we take our Winter trip home), so I'm excited that next year we'll be able to partake!  :)  

When I think of Thanksgiving food, a few things come to mind:  Sister Shubert.  German Potato Salad.  Grandpa's turkey bag.

Let me explain...

Sister Schubert Rolls

Let me tell ya.  This woman is amazing.   If you've never had Sister Schubert rolls, then you are missing out.  They can be found in the frozen food section and will knock your socks right off.  My family has made them for Thanksgiving for the past several years... and Christmas.  That's saying something because all the other dished are homemade.  Rolls?  Nope.  They come in a package that looks like this: 

Directions: 
  1. Unwrap
  2. Put in oven
  3. Take out when golden & buttery
  4. Devour immediately


I have no clue if they're a regional product, but I would pay to have some shipped to me if I couldn't find them.  

It's like putting butter-covered love in your mouth.  Omiword.  You gotta try.

There has even been a Sister Schubert roll eating contest in my family.  That's how much we love them.  :)

German Potato Salad

My grandmother is German and I pretty much grew up loving any and all types of German food.  Sauerkraut?  Yep.  She makes the most amazing German potato salad for just about any meal we have with them.  It's easy to make, but it seems to always taste better when she makes it.  :)

You need: 
potatoes (plain ole 
shallots
bacon
italian dressing (homemade if possible)

Directions:
  1. Boil potatoes.
  2. While potatoes are boiling, fry some bacon until it's nice and crunchy.  Break/chop into tiny pieces.  Keep the juice.
  3. Dice shallots.  I usually have about a handful of diced shallots for a large mixing bowl full of potatoes.  You judge.
  4. Once the potatoes are done, peel and cut them into bite-size chunks.
  5. While the potatoes are still warm, mix italian dressing and bacon oil together.  Drizzle over potatoes & mix in bits of bacon and shallots. 
  6. Salt and pepper if if you want
  7. Serve warm.  

The recipe is pretty easy to adjust.  Put as much bacon, dressing, and shallots as you want.  

Don't get me wrong.  We still have mashed potatoes, but this is always there too.  I LOOOOVE it.  There are usually fights over who gets the last scoop.  I don't have a photo, but it looks pretty much like this:

Grandpa's Turkey Bag

This sounds totally weird.  Grandpa's turkey bag?  My grandpa is always in charge of the turkey.  He gets it ready, cooks it, then carves it.  His secret?  

A bag.

I know many of you have seen these before, but they're awesome.  
You basically put your turkey in a bag, shove whatever you want inside (butter, stuffing, vegetables, etc.) put the bagged-turkey in a deep pan, then cook it like normal.  

It's like your turkey is wearing one of those sweat-running-bag-suits while it cooks.  It keeps all the juices and goodness inside.  The turkey will be so moist and perfect when it's done.  

Sounds weird, but it's awesome.

You can find those bags at your grocery store around the other plastic bag items.... or with the Thanksgiving stuff.  
I hope you enjoyed my three "reipes" for ya!  I know only one of them is a recipe, but these are my most favorite things to eat for Thanksgiving.  Well, these.... and pumpkin pie... mashed potatoes... gravy... green bean casserole... sweet potato casserole...

I love German potato salad! My hubby hates mayo, so this is a good compromise! Thanks for sharing!
